CD Review: Rise Against's "Appeal To Reason"

Dig Magazine, California State University, Long Beach, CA

"Appeal To Reason" is an enjoyable listen, with many noteworthy songs, but considered as a whole it fails to match the extremely high level of promise that Rise Against has shown on previous material.

Dress code makes triumphant return

Daily Trojan, University of Southern California, CA

The dress code is back. Before you start digging out plaid and stockings reminiscent of your private school days, wait.

Instead, take off that Obama shirt you're wearing. Throw that McCain pin back in your drawer. You could lose your right to vote - at least on Election Day.

Decision 'O8 Debate: Palin Sticks to the Script

Courier, Pasadena City College, CA

Last week, I found myself on the same boat as Gov. Sarah Palin: I could not come up with a single example of how John McCain is a maverick, either.

Dear Editor, I know that many people on this campus do not take the Occidental Weekly seriously. I have heard and seen people merely scan the Letters to the Editor and Campus Safety Reports before tossing the paper in the recycling bin, or just on the floor.

With time, a campus becomes eroded and in desperate need of maintenance. In order to run an effective campus, problems must be fixed, cosmetic issues or not. However, due to a string of recent events, the proper steps to ensure the safety of Fullerton College's visitors has been neglected.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill last week that bars all companies doing business in Sudan from bidding on California state contracts. AB 498, sponsored by Assemblyman Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina), is meant to send a message to the government of Sudan, which for the past six years has been victimizing its own citizens in the western region of Darfur.

Palin's Failin' Puts Nail in McCain Campaign

Weekly Hornet, Fullerton College, CA

2 days ago by David McKinley

A?long time ago, in a land far away, in the year 2000, John McCain was a die-hard maverick, a staunch defender of voter rights, the slayer of corporate lobbyists and demolisher of greedy, capitalist campaigns - an odd stance for a Republican presidential hopeful.

Simmering Unrest in Xinjiang Province

Claremont Independent, Claremond McKenna College, CA

The eyes of the world were on China for the month of August as they staged one of the most grandiose Olympic Games in history. Even as Communist Party bosses relished the spotlight and legitimacy offered by the games, critics of China's authoritarian government demanded that attention be paid to China's atrocious human rights record and its persistent mistreatment of minorities.

LMU's little nuisances

I am shocked that LionMail is finally getting its much-needed upgrade. Yes, I have only been on this campus for three years, but I have heard numerous people complain about the mail system here, and am extremely pleased that those problems are finally getting fixed. Everyone on campus knew that the mailboxes filled up too quickly, therefore prohibiting the addition of new emails, and many LMU students also dealt with the problem of the wrong emails getting deleted when you tried to delete things. Even though students and professors complained about these problems to one another, no one really went about trying to get these problems fixed.

First, let me admit my non-guilty pleasure: I love Disney. The movies, the video games (actually, just Kingdom Hearts), the shows when I was a kid, the amusement parks-even the colors of my room are inspired by Buzz Lightyear. But even with Disney's greatness and hosting of the world's happiest place on Earth, there is a dark side.

I am elated to know that my University will not renew its Athletics Department contract with Hilton LAX, a contract that expires Sept. 30, as confirmed by Dr. Jonathan Rothchild, Chair of the Frank Sullivan Social Justice Committee. I am uplifted still more by the memory of so many students and others in the LMU community who took part in the several picket lines and marches in support of the worker-called boycott over the last few years.

In a moment of spontaneous self-expression and fiery self-defense, singer Jordin Sparks veered off script to deliver a bold line that will undoubtedly find its place in MTV's Video Music Awards history books: "It's not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut!"

Now, hold on Jordin.
